It began in 1954 as Lokomotiv, was renamed Urozhay a year later, and became Kairat in 1956 after Urozhay merged with the Kolkhozshy society.

Kairat spent 24 seasons in the Soviet Top League between 1954 and 1991. Defender Seilda Baishakov became the first Kazakh to play for the USSR national team, in 1977, and midfielder Vakhid Masudov captained the side through the 1980s.

Independence brought the club its first honour on the new stage: Kairat won the inaugural championship of Kazakhstan in 1992, along with the country's first Cup. A split in 1998 left the club running as the army side CSKA-Kairat alongside a civilian counterpart, until the two reunited in 2001. Financial trouble in 2008 cost Kairat its licence and its place in the top flight; the club answered by winning the First League straight back in 2009.

Kairat plays its home matches at the Central Stadium in Almaty, which holds 23,804.
