Rot-Weiss Essen is the fixture that carries most weight in Duisburg-Meiderich, the M1-Derby. KFC Uerdingen and Fortuna Düsseldorf sit lower down the same list.

The youth section reached its peak in the 1970s. Duisburg took the German U19 Championship three times in eight years — over VfB Stuttgart in 1972 and again in 1977, then 5:2 against Hertha Zehlendorf in 1979. The first regional honour came earlier: the Niederrhein A-Jugend title in 1955, with the youth department itself rebuilt from scratch after the war.

Thomas Strunz arrived in the youth setup in 1981 and left for Bayern Munich; Bernard Dietz, who came through the same structure, was part of the squad that won the European Championship with West Germany in 1980. The senior club, founded on 2 June 1902 as Meidericher Spielverein, has kept blue and white and the Zebras nickname throughout.

The side now plays in the West division of the U19 DFB-Nachwuchsliga. In 2023/24 it finished ninth in the A-Junioren Bundesliga West on 33 points.
