Long before he lifted the World Cup in Berlin and picked up the Ballon d'Or, Fabio Cannavaro was learning the game in Naples' youth ranks, one of the names the club still points to when the conversation turns to what its academy has produced.

The Primavera side traces its life back to the same year Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli itself came together, 1926, though it did not take its place in the national youth championship until the 1962–63 season. Its best campaign there came in 1978–79, when Napoli won the Campionato Nazionale Primavera outright, a title the youth side has not repeated since. The Coppa Italia Primavera followed in 1996–97.

Matches are played at the Centro Sportivo Giuseppe Piccolo, out in Cercola on the edge of the city, a ground built for developing players rather than for crowds — it holds fewer than 4,000. Meetings with Roma still carry the weight of the Derby del Sole even at this level, and the Campania derby against Salernitana adds its own local edge, alongside the older rivalry with Juventus.

Of everyone who has come through the sector, none is claimed by the city quite like Lorenzo Insigne, who moved up from the youth ranks into a first-team career that ran from 2012 to 2022 and made him the player against whom the academy's later graduates are still measured.
