Weston Homes Stadium sits on London Road, the ground the club has called home since it joined the Football League, and the name on the gates has followed the sponsors rather than the football — London Road, then ABAX Stadium, now Weston Homes. It holds around 15,000, a size that has suited a club which has spent most of its life in the third and fourth tiers rather than chasing bigger arenas.

Peterborough United was formed on 17 May 1934, picking up where Peterborough & Fletton United had left off two years earlier. The nickname, The Posh, traces back further still, to Fletton United in the 1920s, and has stuck through every incarnation since. The club spent its early decades outside the Football League altogether, playing in the Midland League until 1960, when it was elected to the Fourth Division and won the title in its first season there — a result it repeated in 1973–74.

Since the EFL Trophy became a fixture of the lower-league calendar, Posh have made it something of a specialty, lifting it in 2013–14 and then back-to-back in 2023–24 and 2024–25. Darren Ferguson has been the manager most associated with the club's better runs, taking Peterborough up to the Championship in successive promotions in 2008 and 2009 and later winning the League One play-off final in 2011. Ivan Tony passed through the other way, scoring 49 goals in the 2019–20 season before moving on, a tally that still stands as the club's best in a single campaign.

Local rivalries run along the rivers and county lines that once put Peterborough in Northamptonshire: the Nene derby against Northampton Town takes its name from the river running through both towns, while matches against Cambridge United, the county's only other professional club, are known simply as the Cambridgeshire derby. Both fixtures have outlasted the ground-name sponsors, tying the club back to the same patch of London Road where it started out under Fletton United's name almost a century ago.
