Portishead Town

The Playing Fields sits off Bristol Road, a ground built for a village club rather than the level Portishead Town now plays at, which is why the pitch has had to be graded and re-graded as the team has climbed. Around 1,200 can fit in, with seats for only 50 of them, and the club has been pushing to expand that since redevelopment work began.

Molly Jukes started the side in 1912 under the name St. Peter's Portishead, taking on the chairmanship, the treasurer's books and the manager's job while also keeping goal — there was no one else to do it. The club became Portishead A.F.C. in 1948 before settling on its current name.

Somerset football recognised Town early, with four Somerset County League Premier Division titles across the 1990s, but the more telling run has come recently: the Western League Division One title in 2023–24 followed by the Premier Division championship the year after, back to back promotions that took a club once fixed at parish level into the Southern League. James Clarke stands as the club's all-time top scorer through those years, while Ollie Clarke, who went on to play for Bristol Rovers and captain Swindon Town, gives the Posset a name people outside Portishead would recognise.

None of that has settled the club's ground problem. Town finished second in the Southern League Division One South in 2025–26, good enough on the pitch to go up again, but the club was instead relegated back to Step 5 because The Playing Fields did not meet the grading required for the level above. The rivalry with Nailsea & Tickenham and Clevedon Town will carry on a tier below where results said Portishead belonged.
