They won the 1998–99 Liga Indonesia Premier Division against Persebaya Surabaya, and inside a year they were relegated.

The Central Java side had done something similar a decade earlier, taking the Perserikatan crown in 1986–87, also past Persebaya. That run gave the club its nickname: the wandering swordsman of Indonesian silat fiction, and it stuck.

They founded the club in 1932 in Semarang, under a different name, out of an earlier football body called Tots Ons Doel. Stadion Jatidiri has been their base since, though during renovations and disputes over the years they have had to play home matches elsewhere, at Stadion Citarum and at a ground in Magelang.

On the pitch, Tugiyo is still the name attached to 1999: he scored in the final that won them the title.
