PSPS

PSPS Pekanbaru grew out of the football community of Pekanbaru and the surrounding towns of Riau, on Sumatra, formed on 1 January 1955 to bring that scattered scene under one banner — the full name, Persatuan Sepakbola Pekanbaru dan Sekitarnya, still spells out that reach. The club has never played in the top-tier Liga 1, but it has twice fought its way toward it: promotion arrived after the Liga Indonesia First Division title in 1999, and again after winning the Second Division in 2001–02. Runner-up finishes in the Piala Galatama in 2000 and the Piala Menpora back in 1994–95 fill out the older honours. A run to the 2003 AFC Cup marked the high point of that era, well before relegation from Liga 1 in 2013, after an 18th-place finish, pushed the club back down the pyramid it has not left since. Askar Bertuah — Lucky Warriors — is how the club is known around the Kaharudin Nasution Rumbai Stadium, though ownership away from the pitch has caused as much talk as results on it. Malaysian businessman Norizam Tukiman took control in 2017 and rebranded the side as PSPS Riau, a period marked by threats to move the club out of Pekanbaru to Batam or Karo and by open conflict with supporters. That unease ended in June 2023, when Effendi Syahputra and Gede Widiade's PSF Group took over and committed to keeping the club in the city. The promise did not translate into stability: PSPS survived a relegation playoff against Nusantara United in 2023/24, winning 2–1, only for the management to break up the squad straight afterwards. The following season brought a fourth-place finish in Liga 2 and a quarter-final exit to PSIM Yogyakarta that closed off another route back to Liga 1. On the pitch, the fixture that still sets the tone is the Sumatra Derby against PSMS Medan, with Persih Tembilahan supplying a sharper, more local edge as PSPS's rival within Riau itself.
