The Stadion Utama Sumatera Utara holds roughly 25,750 people and became PSMS Medan's home for the 2025-2026 season, a stop that followed two years away from Medan altogether, playing out of Stadion H. Baharoeddin Siregar in nearby Lubuk Pakam while their old ground, Stadion Teladan, went through renovation.

PSMS traces back to 1950. The green and white colours came from the tobacco plantations that shaped the region's economy. That transition brought a single Liga Indonesia championship in 2001, followed six years later by a runners-up finish, but never the sustained dominance of the amateur years.

What followed was harder: relegations in 2002, 2009 and 2018, and between 2009 and 2015 a split ownership dispute that left the club running as two rival versions of itself. Governor Edy Rahmayadi is credited with pulling PSMS back together during that period, a rare case of political intervention actually settling a football club's affairs rather than complicating them. On the pitch, the name most associated with the club's better days remains Ricky Yacobi, still spoken of as the standard other Medan-born strikers get measured against.

The Derby Sumatera against Persiraja Banda Aceh carries the weight of two provinces rather than two neighbourhoods, and it is in Medan, back at the new stadium, that the next chapter of that rivalry plays out.
