Coach John Champion had a hand in shaping the club through that period.

The club's best domestic finish came in 1987, third in the Kenyan First Division, which sent them into the 1988 African Cup of Champions Clubs. Relegation in 2006 and a boycott of the second tier that followed pushed the club to compete for a time as Gusii United before the Shabana name returned.

Seventeen years passed before Shabana saw the top flight again. The 2022/23 National Super League title, won in red, white and blue, sent them back up to the FKF Premier League. Gusii Stadium, their home in Kisii, reopened in September 2024 after a Sh34 million refit, only to shut again in 2026 for a Sh1 billion rehabilitation, leaving the club to play out of Raila Odinga Stadium in Homabay in the meantime. Peter Okidi took over as head coach for the 2025/26 season.
