Canada is the name that follows this side everywhere in CONCACAF. Brazil, Germany and Korea DPR carry the weight on the world stage.

The programme did not start life as an under-20 side at all. It was formed in 1998 to compete at under-18 level, moved up to under-19 in 2001, and only settled into its current under-20 format in 2005, once FIFA restructured the age category. What has not changed is the pipeline running through it: Alex Morgan, Sydney Leroux, Crystal Dunn and Lindsey Horan all passed through this shirt before becoming fixtures of the senior national team, and that route from junior tournament to full international remains the point of the whole operation.

Training runs out of the U.S. Soccer National Training Center, a base that shifted from Carson, California, to the new Arthur M. Blank facility in Fayette County, Georgia — there is no single home ground, since the team assembles for camps and tournaments rather than a league season.

Three FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup titles, won in 2002, 2008 and 2012, sit alongside a run of seven CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championships.
