Japan U20 Women

Japan reached the final of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup only once, in 2022, and lost it to Spain — a result that still sits as the country's best showing at that level alongside two third-place finishes, in 2012 on home soil and again in 2016 and 2018. The run to that final told the story of a side built to feed the senior team rather than to exist for its own sake: Young Nadeshiko, as it is known at home, has for two decades been the proving ground for the players who go on to wear Nadeshiko Japan's shirt. Saki Kumagai came through this age group before captaining Japan to the 2011 Women's World Cup, and Yuki Nagasato followed the same path into that winning squad, along with Mana Iwabuchi and Yui Hasegawa in later years.

The team traces its history back to 2002, when Japan's under-19 side made its first appearance at the FIFA world championship and went as far as the quarter-finals; when FIFA raised the age limit to under-20 in 2006, Japan simply carried its form into the new format. There is no home stadium in the ordinary sense — the squad trains and plays out of the Prince Takamado Memorial JFA Dream Field in Chiba, a ground that holds barely a thousand people, a reminder that this is a development side rather than a box-office draw.

Where Japan has been untouchable is the AFC U-20 Women's Asian Cup, which it has won seven times, most recently in 2026, after finishing runners-up in 2024. That regional record has hardened into a rivalry with South Korea, sharpened further by North Korea, both of them tied into the wider currents of East Asian football; more recently it is Spain who have started to make life awkward for Japan at the very top of the world game.
