Ahead of the Asian Cup returning in 2026, this is the age group where North Korea's dominance in women's football is least in doubt. The under-20 side went to the last FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, in 2024, and won it, the third time it has done so after 2006 and 2016; only 2008 broke the run of titles, when it finished second. No other country has three under-20 world titles.

The squad plays its major fixtures at Kim Il-sung Stadium in Pyongyang, sharing the "Eastern Azaleas" nickname with the senior women's team it feeds. The line runs directly: Ri Song-ho took the 2024 group to the world title and was promoted to the senior job afterward. That squad's scoring came from Jon Il-chong, who had already taken the Golden Boot at the under-17 World Cup before stepping up, with Pak Ok-i wearing the armband.

In continental competition the record reads oddly for a team this decorated: two Asian Cup wins, in 2007 and 2024, against seven runner-up finishes. North Korea keeps reaching the final and, more often than not, losing it to whichever Asian side turns up sharper on the day.

The team has not always shown up. It withdrew from the 2018 and 2022 World Cups without playing a game, absences that sit alongside the titles without explanation.
