Costa Rica's under-20 women last reached the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in 2024, their fourth appearance at that stage, and as at every previous attempt the group phase has been the ceiling — 2010, 2014, 2022 and 2024 all ended there. The record inside CONCACAF reads better: three third-place finishes in the regional under-20 championship, in 2004, 2010 and 2014, with a fourth place in between in 2008.

The side, known as Las Ticas, was put together in 2002 and opened with a 9–1 win over Guatemala in a qualifying tournament played in Panama that March. The 2022 World Cup fell to them not by qualification alone but by hosting rights, staged on home soil under coach José Catoya; the squad still went out in the group stage.

Trinidad and Tobago has produced the sharper occasions. The 2014 semi-final between the two went to penalties, with Costa Rica winning through to book their World Cup place that year. Michelle Montero and Katherin Vargas both passed through this age group on their way to the senior national side.

Home matches are staged at the Estadio Nacional in San José.
