The under-20 side that trains there does not belong to a city the way a league club does.

The team's first tournament came in 2002, the year FIFA launched its Under-20 Women's World Championship, and China finished third at the Asian championship that fed into it. Two years later came the breakthrough: a run to the final of the 2004 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, then repeated in 2006 with the same result. That second final produced the tournament's defining individual story — Ma Xiaoxu, who took both the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot as her side fell one step short of the title. The same year brought the one trophy the age group has actually lifted, the AFC U-20 Women's Asian Cup, won in 2006 after finishing runner-up two years earlier. Since then the results have settled into a pattern of near-misses — third place in 2007, 2011, 2013 and 2017 — without another final.

There is no fixed home ground; recent matches have gone to grounds as far apart as the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre and Helan Mountain Stadium in Yinchuan, wherever the tournament draw or the federation's calendar sends them. In Asia the team that keeps turning up on the other side of the big occasions is Japan, and every meeting between the two carries the weight of a continent's most consistent women's football rivalry.
