Complexe René-Tys
Reims, France
Formerly: Maison des Sports, Maison Régionale des Sports
The Complexe René-Tys sits in the Canal-Vesle district, tucked away near Parc Léo-Lagrange.
Inside, the floor is dominated by the light wood parquet of the main basketball hall. It is a removable system, which explains why the space is not solely bound to one sport. The same surface serves volleyball and boxing, shifting according to the fixture list.
The venue opened in 1978, designed by Jean-Claude Dondel, and was renamed in 1981 to honour a local councilor. That history does not show in the brickwork, which looks clean and modern, but it explains the current tenants. Champagne Châlons Reims Basket plays here in the top French division, while the women’s side and a local volleyball club also call the complex home.
Beyond basketball, the hall has hosted heavyweight boxing, most notably the world championship in 2013, and concerts by bands such as AC/DC and Iron Maiden in the early days.
