M. Dvorkin Sports House

It is easy to spot the M. Dvorkin Sports House from a distance. The buildings on either side of the river look like a solid wall of grey blocks, but the sports centre is isolated, set back on the island. The wide, flat approach leads straight to the main doors, and the building itself has a low, rounded roof that looks like a lid.

It does not have the giants and the floods of the nearby Ivan Yarygin Palace of Sports, which is where the men's volleyball team moved on when the money came. Here, the scale is smaller, and the surface is wood parquetry rather than ice. The Women's Volleyball Club Yenisey use this ground as their home. The wooden floor is worn in patches where they have been switching to a back three in their training drills, but it holds their matches well.

The building was put up in the early 1980s, and it has kept its original shape through the changes. In 1998, after the boxer Mikhail Dvorkin died, they changed the name to honour him. It started life as a rental base for the Krasnoyarsk College of Olympic Reserve, a place where young athletes would store their equipment before the days of proper clubs. That history is still visible in the utilitarian design of the entrance and the plain concrete steps.

It is not a place that draws crowds from far away. The capacity of 1,500 is enough for the local teams, and the men's side left in 2020. The women's team stay. The arena is not a temple of football or a cathedral of sport; it is a working building in the Tsentralny District, kept going by the local authority.
