The Estádio Elcyr Resende de Mendonça sits in Bacaxá, the district that gave the ground its everyday name. It opened in February 1955, and lighting arrived only in 1991, when floodlights were fitted to allow evening fixtures.

Boavista Sport Club calls it home. It has hosted Taça Guanabara semi-finals for Boavista against Volta Redonda, and in March 2024 it staged the first leg of the Taça Rio final, where Boavista ground out a 1-0 win over Botafogo before the trophy slipped away on penalties in the return fixture. The venue has also stepped in as neutral ground: in 2021, a Copa do Brasil second-round tie between Corinthians and Retrô was moved here from Volta Redonda after the mayor there blocked the fixture, and Corinthians advanced on penalties. Chapecoense beat Boavista 2-0 here in a later Copa do Brasil round.

The pitch has drawn complaints more than once. In 2015 and again in 2024, reports described patches of dead grass and standing water, and Fluminense's Benjamin Back criticised the surface publicly after playing there in 2024.
