The name on the ground was not there at the start. When it opened in July 1925 it was called simply Stadium , or El Stadium. The renaming came in 1950, after Хелиодоро Родригес Лопес — the club president who had pushed for a full rebuild — died that March with the work still unfinished. No sponsor's name has ever been attached to it since.

That rebuild ran from 1946 to 1951 under Хосе Энрике Марреро Регаладо. The pitch itself came later: the earth surface was replaced and the turf laid on 31 August 1952.

What stands today took fifteen years to assemble, stand by stand, to a design by Карлос А. Шварц. Herradura followed in 1995, San Sebastián in 2001 — roughly 2,000 million pesetas across the whole sequence.

Spain have played here more than once, meeting Poland in 1994 and Slovakia in a 1998 World Cup qualifier. The concert bookings run just as long: Elton John in 1993, Shakira in 2006, Aerosmith in 2017, Ed Sheeran in 2024.

In June 2026 the club set out plans to take capacity to 25,000.
