Kalamata Municipal Stadium
Kalamata, Greece
Formerly: National Stadium
It sits on undeveloped land near the eastern beachfront of the Messinian Gulf. The **Kalamata Municipal Stadium** opened in 1976, built by the municipality on land that had not seen development until then. It holds **4,496** seats.
For years it carried the name National Stadium, a title still visible on the road signs outside, but the shift to its current identity coincided with the arrival of the local club. **Kalamata F.C.** moved here in **2003**, leaving behind the Messiniakos Stadium after financial disputes had soured relations. That same year, the ground witnessed its highest domestic attendance: **4,286** spectators packed in for a Super League match against Olympiacos.
The pitch remains natural grass, maintained through a seasonal switch between cold and warm varieties suited to the coastal climate. It has hosted more than just league football. On February 8, 1995, it held **8,000** fans for a friendly against Romania. A World Cup qualifier followed later, in **1996**, when Greece beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 3–0 on September 1.
Beyond sport, the venue has served as a stage for culture. It hosts the Papaflessia International Athletics Meeting, which turned international in **1995**, and has accommodated events such as the Kalamata International Dance Festival. A concert by Yannis Parios took place on July 17, 2019, bringing a different kind of noise to the concrete tiers. The facility is managed by the municipality, with details accessible via their main site rather than a dedicated portal for the stadium itself. It is not a place of grandeur, but it is the only ground in the city, anchored to the coast and to the community that built it.
