Polideportivo Alexis Argüello
Managua, Nicaragua
The arena does not try to be anything other than a roof over a court. Its identity comes from the name stitched into its history: the Polideportivo Alexis Argüello. The structure arrived with a deadline. Construction began in May 2016 and finished within eighteen months, leaving the city with a hall ready for the XI Central American and Caribbean Games in December 2017.
The weight of the roof is the first thing that registers. The court sits flat beneath, hardwood laid in straight lines.
The arena is a neutral space, managed jointly by the Instituto Nicaragüense de Deportes and the Managua City Government. That neutrality is tested when international fixtures arrive. The qualifier between Mexico and Nicaragua filled the hall with 7,641 spectators, leaving only a handful of seats empty.
