At the fifth edition of the Central American Sub-23 Championship, held in El Salvador in 2022, Nicaragua's Under-23 men's side went through all five matches unbeaten and closed it out with a 3-1 win over Costa Rica in the final — the gold medal that stands as the squad's best result. Axel Gutiérrez took the MVP award and finished as top scorer with 96 points, and John Morales captained the side under head coach Jorge Mena.

That title followed a runner-up finish behind Guatemala in 2018, the same year the age group made its first appearance at the NORCECA Pan American Cup. A return to that competition in 2023, played on home ground in Managua, brought a fifth-place finish from one win and four defeats.

Guatemala and Costa Rica remain the sides Nicaragua measures itself against in AFECAVOL play. Home matches are played at the Polideportivo Alexis Argüello in Managua, built in 2017 for the Central American Games and holding 8,000 for volleyball.
