The name says more about the neighbourhood than the ground itself. Kasımpaşa's old ground carried the district's name for decades before it was renamed for Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who grew up here and played for the local club as a young man.
The 2005 opening replaced whatever had stood before, and the club marked it with a win over Maltepespor, 2-1, the kind of result that gives a new ground its first line of history.
What it offers instead is proximity.
What stays with the ground is the naming itself, and the fact that few clubs anywhere can point to a head of state who once wore their shirt.
