Sporthalle IGS Wendenring: Stadium in Braunschweig

Sporthalle IGS Wendenring opened in Braunschweig in 2025, replacing the demolished Tunica-Sporthalle as the city’s new indoor hub. It stands alongside the 6th Integrated Comprehensive School, a project realized through a public-private partnership between the City of Braunschweig and GOLDBECK Public Partner GmbH. The building arrived after 17 months of construction, arriving at the DGNB ‘Gold’ certification and the KfW-40-NH energy efficiency standard.

Unlike older venues that creak with history, this one is defined by its modern utility. It is the first four-court sports hall of a school in Braunschweig, a shift that allows the space to host USC Braunschweig volleyball matches and SG Braunschweig-Bargteheide Bees basketball games simultaneously. The hall also serves badminton events, with sources mentioning 16 courts available for such activity, though the specific floor material remains unconfirmed in available records.

Where the figure of 1,000 sits in capacity is unclear; agents found no verification for that number, and the only mention of ‘1000’ in relation to Braunschweig sports halls referred to the Veolia Towers (formerly Arena Braunschweig). The hall’s location in the Nordstadt district places it in a part of the city that has undergone administrative shifts, since November 2021 being part of Stadtbezirk 322 – Nördliche Schunter-/Okeraue. The full school completion is scheduled for 2027.
