The club grew out of the Akademischer Sport-Club Braunschweig, with 50 founding members setting up USC in 1971. Its senior teams never carried an animal nickname the way the city's basketball side became known as "Die Löwen," but the youth section borrowed the idea anyway: the junior teams go by "Die Volleyos," a name built from Leo, Latin for lion, and volleyball, with a stated motto of fighting like lions.

The women's team had its best run in the mid-2000s, winning the 2. Bundesliga in 2001/02 to reach the top-flight 1. Bundesliga, where it stayed for three seasons before dropping back down. The men's side has moved in and out of the 2. Bundesliga Nord across several spells since 1999, its best finish a sixth place in 2005/06.

Matches are played at the Sporthalle IGS Wendenring, a hall holding 1,000. The men's team is now working its way back up, promoted to the 2. Bundesliga Nord for the 2026/27 season after time spent in the 3. Liga West, while the women continue in the Regionalliga Nordwest.
