Джурджу stands on the Danube, and this ground has spent most of its life as a modest municipal pitch known locally as Fabrica de zahăr — the sugar factory — a nickname that outlasted the stadium's own official name for decades after it opened in 1960 for FC Olimpia Giurgiu.

The transformation came only after Astra Giurgiu's owner, Ioan Niculae, moved the club south from Ploiești. Between 2012 and 2014 the running track was torn out, a new east stand went up at a cost of around three million euros, and a south stand followed in 2014, taking the total spend to roughly four million. What had been a provincial athletics bowl became a fully seated, 8,500-capacity ground with a lengthened pitch, proper drainage and irrigation — built for continental football rather than local derbies.

Astra used it as their base through that European era, right up until the club's liquidation in 2022, when FC Dunărea Giurgiu took over as tenants. The national team has passed through too, including a friendly against Lithuania in 2016, evidence that the reconstruction achieved what it set out to do.
