Stadionul Municipal

The clue to how Brăila's football people talk about their ground sits in the tense: not what it is, but what it was, and what it has become since. When Stadionul Municipal opened on 21 August 1974, replacing the old Vasile Roaită ground demolished a few years earlier, it held 30,000 people on wooden benches without a single individual seat — a scale the city has not needed since.

That original capacity explains the two matches locals still cite by heart. On 15 March 1992, 25,000 came to watch Dacia Unirea face Steaua București in Liga I. The record stands from a cup tie on 1 December 2004, when 30,000 filled the ground for a Cupa României quarter-final against Dinamo București, who won 2-0. Neither figure squares with what the stadium can hold today.

Seating arrived in stages, not all at once. Plastic seats went in on two of the stands in 2008, roughly 8,000 of them, cutting capacity down sharply. The main stand, Tribuna I, got its own reseating in 2012, painted in the club's white and blue. Beyond football, the ground has also hosted speedway, including European Championship qualifying rounds.

What the stadium has not hosted is a national team fixture or a European tie — its story has stayed local. And the more recent chapters are less kind: without modern floodlights or a running track to meet league standards, Dacia Unirea have at times had to shift matches away to Insurăței. Local reporting now describes the ground plainly as derelict.
