Various grounds in Kolkata (e.g., Bidhannagar M.C. Ground, Rabindra Sarobar Stadium)

The ground sits tucked into the Lake Gardens area, a patch of green bordered by the water of Rabindra Sarobar. The Calcutta Improvement Trust opened the venue in 1961, developing it alongside the lake excavation, and the original name, Lake Stadium, describes its setting more accurately than the current title, Rabindra Sarobar Stadium, which honours the poet Rabindranath Tagore.

What distinguishes the site is not the modernisation of the stands, but the function it kept as the city’s football anchor while larger arenas underwent reconstruction. When Salt Lake Stadium was upgraded for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup, the league handed its fixtures to this venue, and the upgrades followed: floodlights were installed and the turf relaid. Atlético de Kolkata used the ground during the 2016–17 season, and Mohun Bagan have played AFC Cup matches here, but the stadium’s primary allegiance is to the Calcutta Football League, where it hosts clubs including Tollygunge Agragami.

The architecture remains utilitarian. The government of West Bengal owns the site, but it is operated by Mohammedan Sporting Club.

The most significant event in its history occurred decades before the recent renovation, on June 28, 1964, when the ground hosted an Olympic qualifying play-off between India and Iran, drawing 25,000 spectators.
