Wentworth Park

Wentworth Park sits at the head of Blackwattle Bay, on land that was once a polluted swamp before being filled with silt dredged from Sydney Harbour. The ground opened in 1882, though it was formally proclaimed under the Public Parks Act 1884 on 4 November 1885.

The site has hosted nearly every code available. Greyhound racing began in 1932, with a formal licence issued to the National Coursing Association in 1939. The sport will remain until the track closes in October 2026. Rugby league has been a staple since 1908, when the Glebe Dirty Reds entered the NSW competition. They played there until their expulsion in 1929, returning for pre-season matches in 2018 before being announced as permanent tenants in 2023. The Sydney Roosters currently use the grounds for NSW Cup matches.

The current grandstand, completed in 1987, has a seated capacity of 3,000. It is modelled on Hollywood Park. Historical records cite much larger crowds: 15,000 for a 1912 Great Britain Lions Tour match and 10,000 for a cricket match in 1896. The playing surface for the greyhound track was originally grass, replaced by loam in 1993. The sporting fields remain natural grass.

In 2024/2025, the NSW Government announced plans to demolish the greyhound track and grandstand by 2027 to redevelop the site into community sporting fields, green spaces, and housing. The venue has always been known as Wentworth Park, named after William Charles Wentworth, Australia's first native-born politician. It was built by the City of Sydney Council and trustees appointed by the NSW Government.
