And here's the thing about late goals — they tend to stick. S. Bassett made sure of that in the 83rd minute, finding the net to give his side all three points. Brooklyn had been comfortable enough for most of the evening, yet that single moment proved decisive.
The hosts controlled 56 per cent of possession and registered five shots on target, but created zero big chances throughout the contest. To be fair, Pittsburgh offered little in return with just one big chance from their 96 attacks, though they managed to convert theirs.
Pittsburgh's goalkeeper made five saves compared to Brooklyn's three, suggesting the away side faced more pressure than their shot statistics might imply. The visitors also completed 14 tackles to Brooklyn's 11, a sign of how tightly they contested every ball.
Yellow cards came at 49 minutes for O. Mikoy and 74 minutes for J. Walti, keeping the match relatively disciplined. By then both sides had already made several changes, with notable substitutions arriving at 62, 63, 70 and 89 minutes.
Bassett himself was substituted in the 90th minute, coming off after contributing the only goal of the game. Brooklyn meanwhile had made three changes at the 89-minute mark, bringing on M. Anderson, Gabriel Alves and R. McLaughlin.
Brooklyn's recent form offers some context for this defeat — three losses in their last five matches, including a 5-0 hammering by Charleston Battery. Pittsburgh have been steadier, winning two and drawing two of their past five outings.
The gap between fourth and twelfth in the table remains meaningful. Brooklyn still have work to do if they want to climb away from the bottom half, while Pittsburgh can take confidence from a result that extended their unbeaten run to five games.
