Maimonides Park
Coney Island had already lost its ballpark to the wrecking ball once — Steeplechase Park closed in 1964 and stood empty for decades before the city broke ground here in August 2000. Maimonides Park opened the following June, and the Brooklyn Cyclones had barely finished their first homestand before the club discovered it had undersold its own stadium: within three weeks, crews bolted an extra tier onto the right-field pavilion to keep pace with ticket demand.
Hurricane Sandy did more lasting damage. The storm tore through the ballpark in October 2012, and the natural grass that had carried the field since opening day never came back — FieldTurf went down before the 2013 season and has stayed since.
The name on the building has changed twice. KeySpan Park gave way to MCU Park in 2010, and since May 2021 it has carried the Maimonides Medical Center name under a ten-year deal. The seating count has moved the other way, shrinking from the post-expansion high of 7,500 down to 7,000 after part of the stands came out following the 2015 season.
Baseball is only the anchor tenant. Rugby United New York played here, so did the New York Cosmos for a season, and NYU's college teams used it as a home ground for years. Brooklyn FC's women's side arrived in 2025 with the men's team to follow in USL Championship play. On the stranger end of the ballpark's calendar, Nathan's Famous still runs its hot dog contest at the gates each Fourth of July, and Joey Chestnut set the current record — 76 hot dogs in ten minutes — there in 2021.
