Cosmos put three points further clear of the drop zone with a 6-1 victory over Pennarossa in the Italian Championship's third round. And here's the thing — we had called for a home win before kick-off with 58 per cent confidence, and the scoreline paid that out in full. What we hadn't quite anticipated was the manner of it. Pennarossa, who had lost all three of their opening matches, simply could not contain Cosmos' attacking moves. The visitors managed more attacks and more corners, but those numbers mean very little when you concede six goals.
By then, Cosmos had already turned their season around in the space of ninety minutes. They came into this match with one win, one draw and one defeat, and the victory takes them to four points with a game in hand on several sides above them. Pennarossa's run of defeats stretches back to their opening three games, and the gap between them and safety grows wider.
The statistics tell a story of control rather than dominance. Cosmos had 44 per cent possession but hit the target eight times from their eight shots. Pennarossa held 56 per cent of the ball and managed six shots on target, but could not find the way through. M. Evaristi missed a penalty in the eighty-fourth minute — a final indignity for the visitors who had already seen their hopes of a comeback evaporate.
What matters now is momentum. Cosmos have shown they can score goals and, more importantly, they have shown they can win them. Pennarossa have work to do, and they will need to find a response if they are to avoid a difficult season. The table says what it says, but tables change when teams respond.
