Elgin City — Dundee II: 3:0, Challenge Cup

Elgin City beat Dundee II 3-0 in the Call Cup Group Stage on Tuesday night. The hosts took all three points at home with a comfortable performance that settled the group fixture. M. Gallagher scored twice while C. Perrie contributed an own goal to the tally.

The opening came early, at the second minute. Gallagher found the net straight away, giving Elgin City a lead they would not relinquish. The goal set the tone for the evening and kept Dundee II on the defensive from the outset.

A second Gallagher strike at the thirty-seventh minute doubled the advantage. Then, at the forty-third minute, Perrie turned the ball into his own net, making it three. By then Elgin City had already controlled the tempo, and the visitors could only watch from behind.

The statistics tell a familiar story. Elgin City held 36 per cent possession but registered eight shots on target against six saves for the Dundee goalkeeper. The visitors dominated possession at 64 per cent yet could not find the back of the net, with zero shots on target all evening. Elgin City also won thirteen corners to two.

We had called for a home victory with 82 per cent confidence, and the result vindicated that assessment. The performance was not built on flair but on efficiency, and that is often enough in cup football.

The win comes after mixed recent form for Elgin City, including a heavy 5-1 defeat at Stranraer on Saturday. Dundee II have struggled too, losing four of their last five matches. This result puts the hosts in a stronger position in the group standings.
