Giants Release Wide Receiver Darius Slayton After Seven Years
New York cuts its longest-tenured player, 29-year-old Slayton, freeing over $3m in cap space; he becomes an immediate free agent after 296 catches for the club.
The Giants have released wide receiver Darius Slayton, 29, ending a seven-season run that made him the longest-tenured player on the current roster.
New York took Slayton in the fifth round of the 2019 draft. Over seven seasons he caught 296 passes for 4,435 yards and 22 touchdowns, and led the team in receiving yards four times — in 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023.
Slayton signed a three-year, $36m contract before last season and was due $13m in 2026. Cutting him clears just over $3m in salary-cap space for the Giants. He is now a free agent and can sign with any club immediately, without going through waivers.
Slayton posted his reaction on social media: "Grateful for my time in New York. Seven years with the Giants was nothing but love for one of the most prestigious organisations in the NFL. Looking forward to what's next."
The move follows an offseason in which the Giants brought in receivers Darnell Mooney and Odell Beckham, while rookie Malachi Fields impressed in training camp. Malik Nabers, meanwhile, is hoping to be back for the season opener after a knee injury.
Slayton's release removes the most experienced receiver from a group that has been rebuilt around Mooney, Beckham and the returning Nabers, and leaves him free to pick his next team without delay.
