Sean McVay Owns Rams' Loss to 49ers in Melbourne
McVay took full blame after the Rams fell 7:27 to San Francisco in Australia, citing squandered chances despite an early Puka Nacua touchdown.
Sean McVay accepted full responsibility for the Rams' 7:27 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, which opened the season.
"They outdid us in every phase. I did a poor job with my work here. This is a good lesson for us. This loss will define us only if we let it," said McVay.
Los Angeles led 7:3 early in the second quarter on a 41-yard catch by Puka Nacua, then failed to score again. Matthew Stafford threw an interception on one of the next five possessions, Tyler Higbee lost a fumble, and two more drives ended in failed fourth-down conversions. San Francisco scored on five of its nine possessions.
McVay declined to link the result to the team's travel schedule. The Rams flew 15 hours to Melbourne shortly before kickoff, while the 49ers spent nearly the entire week in Australia.
"I'm not looking for excuses. You can talk about the flight or anything else, but we just weren't good enough. I didn't prepare the team well enough. The 49ers earned this win," said McVay.
