Eagles offensive lineman Jordan Mailata said the heat was another argument for the players union to push for a ban on artificial turf. "I've never thought about how hot a stadium can be if it's turf. [The heat] just sits there and bounces up into you," he said. He wants all-grass fields so that players are not put in dangerous positions "if we don't have to".
The Fox cameras showed water being poured on players' shoes. Eagles centre Cam Jurgens said he replaced his cleats several times because they melted. "Half-time was like a Nascar pit crew helping me get ready for the second half," he said.
Tennessee had the same problem a week earlier in their season opener against the New York Jets. Titans safety Amani Hooker said the midsole on one of his shoes "melted completely off".
