B36 Tórshavn

Kristján á Neystabø took over a club that had fallen out of the top flight twice in the middle of the 1980s. He rebuilt it from the committee room rather than the pitch, and the first thing the rebuilt side won was the Faroe Islands Cup in 1991.

In the mid-1930s a group of young men in Tórshavn found they could not get a game for HB, the club already established in the town, and so started playing among themselves. Matches were being played from 1935; the formal founding came on 28 March 1936, and the name records the year — Bóltfelagið 1936.

Titles came early. Three championships in the first five post-war years, then two more by 1962, before a gap of 35 years opened up. When the league came back to B36 in 1997 it stayed within reach: five more championships followed, the last two back to back in 2014 and 2015, for 11 in all.

The cup final of 2018 is the one people in Tórshavn still describe in detail. B36 played almost the whole of extra time two men short after a pair of red cards, kept their heads, and beat HB on penalties.

Two seasons later the club became the first from the Faroes to come through three qualifying rounds of the UEFA Europa League, in 2020/21. It won the cup again the following summer.

All of that happens at Gundadalur, a ground of around 5,000 that B36 shares with HB — the same club whose selection policy sent those young men off to form their own side in the first place. The city has one football ground worth the name, and both of its clubs use it.
