Sepp Herberger managed the club's predecessor, SV Nowawes 03, for a single season in 1928–1929. The Nazi years and then the German Democratic Republic reshaped it repeatedly, into SV Nowawes, then SG Karl-Marx Babelsberg, then BSG Motor Babelsberg, before reunification brought it back to its own name and its own board in December 1991.
The club is still known as Die Nulldreier, after the 03, and it plays in blue and white at the Karl-Liebknecht-Stadion. Promotion to the 2. Bundesliga arrived in 2001 under Hermann Andreev, and Babelsberg held on there for two seasons before dropping back down. Bankruptcy followed in 2003, and the club kept going regardless. Liga.
None of that history means as much locally as the fixture with Energie Cottbus.
