Cheshire Phoenix

The team began life in 1984 as the Ellesmere Port Jets, a name that lasted only until 1988, when it became the Chester Jets on a move to the Northgate Arena. That switch coincided with the club's strongest run: the NBL Division One title in 1990–91 and, after the Northgate years gave way to a return to Cheshire branding in 2007, back-to-back BBL Championships in 2001–02 and 2004–05 under coach Mike Burton.

In 2012 the BBL withdrew the Cheshire Jets' franchise over financial difficulties. Local businesses and supporters took the club on themselves, restructured it as a Community Interest Company and renamed it Cheshire Phoenix. The club spent three more years playing away from its home town before the Cheshire Oaks Arena opened in Ellesmere Port in 2015, ending a spell of more than two decades based in Chester.

Dave Gardner's number 11 hangs retired at the arena. The North West derby against Manchester Giants remains the fixture that matters most locally. Trophy wins in 2022 and 2024 show the current side, under Ben Thomas, can still win a one-off final. A BBL Championship has not returned to Ellesmere Port since 2005.
