Colorado Springs sits at the foot of Pikes Peak, high enough above sea level that its football ground carries the altitude with it. Weidner Field, home since 2021, stands roughly 1,840 metres up, reckoned the highest professional football stadium in the United States. It holds 8,000 for football, expanding to 15,000 for concerts; before it opened, the club played at Sand Creek Stadium.

Ownership changed hands in 2022, when Weidner Apartment Homes, led by Dean Weidner, took the club over from the Ragain family. The switch brought a new badge and a new palette — blue and black as the main colours, grey and white kept as accents.

The club went without a trophy until 2024, when it won the USL Championship, beating Rhode Island FC 3-0 in the final after finishing top of the Western Conference play-offs. Three years earlier, Hadji Barry had already made his mark, finishing the 2021 season as the league's top scorer with 25 goals.

New Mexico United is the fixture that matters most to Switchbacks supporters. Meetings with Colorado Rapids come mostly in the US Open Cup, close enough in distance along the interstate to be known as the I-25 derby.

The franchise was awarded to the Ragain family on 5 December 2013. The following January, supporters voted the club's name into being: Switchbacks, borrowed from the road that climbs Pikes Peak in tight turns toward the summit.
