D.C. United needed somewhere to send its young players between the academy and first team, and in 2018 it built one: a reserve side of its own. Loudoun United FC took the field in Leesburg, Virginia, for the first time in 2019.

Segra Field opened that August with 5,000 seats, though the ground wasn't ready for the start of the season — early home fixtures were played at Audi Field, before Loudoun moved into its permanent home.

In February 2023, Attain Sports and Entertainment bought the club, leaving D.C. United with only a minority stake and freeing Loudoun to enter the US Open Cup. Ted Ku-DiPietro and Gavin Turner both moved up to D.C. United; Tyler Freeman was sold to Nashville SC.

None of it has produced a trophy.
