In 1955 Deportivo Cali finished bottom of the Colombian table, and what followed was not relegation but exclusion: the debts left behind were large enough that the league shut the club out of professional football altogether, from 1956 to 1959.

That club had been founded in 1912, when students led by the Lalinde brothers formed it, on 23 November, as The Cali Football Club. It came back from its years out to a golden run of five championships, then reached a Copa Libertadores final in 1978 — the first Colombian club to get that far, and it lost as runner-up. A second era of titles ran from 1995 to 2005; Cali later added a Copa Colombia, in 2010, a Superliga, in 2014, and two further championships, in 2015 and 2021.

Green and white shirts, cut through by a red diagonal borrowed from the flag of the city, gave the club its usual name, Los Verdiblancos. Across Cali, the fixture that still matters most is against América de Cali, the Clásico Vallecaucano.

For more than a century the club belonged to its members. That ended in 2025, when a Guatemalan investment group, IDC Network, took an 85% stake.

Cali is also the only club in Colombia that owns its own stadium, Estadio Deportivo Cali, out in Palmaseca near Palmira, some 25 km from the city. A 2018 renovation took capacity past its old record, to 42,000 — a number the club is not permitted to reach: safety rules dating from 2017 cap the crowd at 25,000 to 30,000.
