Gaborone United

The Gabs Derby against Township Rollers is the fixture that defines Gaborone United's season more than any table position. Supporters call the club Moyagoleele, a Setswana phrase about the stamina a long-distance traveller needs, and over the decades the name has matched the results better than not.

Nine Botswana Premier League titles stretch from 1967, the year the club was formed, to 2026, with the earliest three coming inside its first four seasons. Nine Botswana FA Challenge Cup wins sit alongside them. What breaks that pattern is the gap in between: after winning the league in 1990, the club went nineteen years without another title, finally ending the drought in 2009.

The 2018–19 season pulled the other way. Financial trouble forced the sale of key players and brought a three-point deduction. Gaborone United instead won the league three times in the following seven years. Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, now captain of the Botswana national team, started his career at the club in that same rebuilding period.

Gaborone United Stadium holds around 5,000, though the club is nicknamed "the Money Machine" for the financial backing that has kept it competitive through the leaner years.
