Grand-Saconnex

FC du Grand-Saconnex's sharpest fight this year has had nothing to do with a matchday opponent. In 2026, the club's leadership pushed back against the creation of a rival outfit, FC OSAS/FC Gardiol, in the neighbouring Pommier district, arguing that the Stade du Blanché already had no room to share with another side.

That instinct to guard the pitch traces back to 2016, when president Karin Bournier and vice-president Corinne Toffoletto rebuilt a club that had been drifting through Switzerland's lower tiers. Membership rose from 120 to 550 under them, and the growth translated into results on the pitch: between 2018 and 2024, Grand-Saconnex climbed from the 2nd League through the 2nd League Inter to the 1st League, then, on 8 June 2024, beat Black Stars on penalties to reach the Promotion League for the first time. Goalkeeper André Monteiro saved the decisive spot-kick.

Sporting director Valentin Toffoletto and coach Jean-Michel Aebi built that run. Aebi left in May 2025; the club pointed to a budget that could not keep pace with the semi-professional demands of the Promotion League. The squad still carries Challenge League experience, among them goalkeeper Leandro Zbinden, formerly of Young Boys, defender Adam Ouattara, and midfielders Sinclair Badji Dega and Theophilius Opoku-Mensah.

Grand-Saconnex play in red and black, a livery unchanged since the club was founded on 13 March 1978 in the commune it is named for, on the edge of Geneva by Cointrin airport.
