Reaching the semi-finals of the Stanbic Uganda Cup in 2025 had not been done by a club from Mbale since Mbale Heroes managed it in 1999. Kataka got there the hard way, beating Police FC on penalties in the quarter-final before KCCA FC ended the run — the 51st edition of the competition.
Goalkeeper Ronald Nsubuga carried much of that campaign. Captain Peter Lusimbula, once of Uganda's under-17 side, has led the team through the years spent grinding in the FUFA Big League, work that paid off with promotion to the Uganda Premier League for the 2026/27 season.
Locally the club goes by Lufumbi Boys, and the fixture that matters most in Mbale is against Mbale Heroes — the Elgon Derby, named for the mountain that overlooks the town. Kataka play at the Mbale Municipal Stadium.
Roughly a decade in the second tier ended with that promotion. Two Mbale sides have now reached an Uganda Cup semi-final.
