Thirteen league titles arrived in stretches rather than a steady climb. Mutebi's side went furthest in continental competition in 2017, holding Mamelodi Sundowns to a draw and beating Al Ahly at home in the CAF Champions League, a result still spoken of in Lugogo.

The club began as Kampala City Council FC, formed in April 1963 by Samuel Wamala, then head of the Sewage Works section in the City Engineering Department. The name changed to KCCA FC in 2010, after the city's governing body was rebranded the Kampala Capital City Authority. Jennifer Musisi, Executive Director from 2011 to 2018, is credited with putting the club on a more professional footing during that period.

KCCA still plays at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo, a 10,000-capacity ground it now shares with NEC FC, giving rise to a newer fixture known as the Lugogo Derby alongside the older Kampala Derby against SC Villa. The academy has done its own work for the first team: Allan Okello came through it to be named Airtel FUFA Player of the Year in 2019 before moving on to Paradou AC, while Mustafa Kizza went from the same production line to Montreal Impact.

Alongside the league record sit ten Uganda Cups and two CECAFA Kagame Cups, the first from 1978 and the second from 2019.
