Gjemselund Stadion holds 5,824 people. The number itself has been argued over — one widely used database lists 6,700 — but the figure that holds up is the smaller one.

The club plays there in red shirts with white shorts, and travels in blue. It goes by KIL, which is simply the initials of Kongsvinger Idrettslag, the sports association the football team belongs to.

Its skaters won national relay titles in 1989 and again in 1992. The footballers have won nothing of that order. Their one approach to a trophy came in 2016, in the final of the Norwegian Cup, and they lost it. Runners-up is the highest line on the football section's honours board, and it is the only line.

For a club from a town this size, reaching a cup final at all meant a run through opponents with far deeper squads, and it remains the match people in Kongsvinger measure other seasons against. The team currently competes a division below the top flight.

What makes the modest honours board read differently is the date underneath it. Kongsvinger Idrettslag was founded in 1892 — before organised football in Norway had settled into anything like its present shape, and long before the club had a professional football section to speak of. The football came later, attached to a body that already existed for other reasons, on ice as much as on grass. More than a century separates the founding from that afternoon in 2016.
