Strømsgodset

Marienlyst stadion has held 8,935 people since the ground was reshaped for a different kind of night: the club's most recognisable name walked out there as a fifteen-year-old, already the youngest player in Norwegian top-flight history, and left it as the youngest scorer too, before Real Madrid and then Arsenal took him on, the armband at Arsenal included. His father had worn the same shirt before him, on the same pitch, for the same club in Drammen.

Strømsgodset traces back to 1907, to the Gulskogen district, a multi-sport club whose football arm became the part anyone remembers. It nearly stopped being anyone's business at all in 2005 and 2006, when the finances collapsed and a group of investors had to step in to keep the name alive; the history and the paperwork survived, even if the squad that came out the other side barely resembled the one that went in.

What that history mostly rests on is a run in the late 1960s and early 1970s carried by a group of players known as the Rødgata Boys, who took the club to the 1970 league title and three cups along the way. A second championship, in 2013, sits alongside it — two titles more than forty years apart, with two runner-up finishes in between to remind everyone how close and how rare that gap was.

Larsen numbers matter less here than one fact: Lars-Christopher Vilsvik has played more matches for the club than anyone, 452 of them since his debut in 2010. The rivalry that still means the most, though, has nothing to do with trophies — it is with Mjøndalen IF, eight kilometres down the road, a fixture that has been called the Buskerud Derby since 1933 and has outlasted most of what either club has won.

Godset, as Drammen still calls them, remain the club that grew out of Gulskogen in 1907.
