Kopavogur HK Women

Kópavogur sits just south of Reykjavík, close enough to the capital that the two towns run together. HK carries that identity: the club started out as nothing but a handball side, a group of boys knocking a ball around in 1969 before the section was formally registered on 26 January 1970. Football came to the club only later, in 1992.

The women's team now competes in the Olís Deild, the top flight of the domestic game, playing out of Íþróttahöll Kópavogs.

The club's stronger reputation in handball has come through the men's game, and through players who passed through HK on their way to bigger things. Bjarki Már Elísson began there between 2009 and 2013 before moving on to Veszprém and Paris Saint-Germain.

Geography has given HK its sharpest rivalry. Afturelding, based in neighbouring Mosfellsbær, traces its own roots back to a split from HK, and meetings between the two are known as the Systurderby — the sister derby.

HK was founded in 1970.
