Kuala Lumpur City

Down in Cheras, the Klang Valley Derby against Selangor still carries the old geography of the capital — City Boys against the state next door. The rivalry outlasted the club's own name, which changed twice before settling as Kuala Lumpur City FC in 2021, after spells as Kuala Lumpur FA and briefly Kuala Lumpur United.

The founding side, set up by the Kuala Lumpur Football Association in 1974, won its Malaysia Cup hat-trick across 1987, 1988 and 1989, adding the domestic league title in both 1986 and 1988 and a pair of ASEAN Champions' Cups in the same stretch. In 2013 they dropped into the third tier, the Malaysia FAM League, for the first time in the club's history.

Promotion arrived in 2017 through the Malaysia Premier League, and by 2021, playing as Kuala Lumpur City, they won the Malaysia Cup again — 32 years after the last one. They reached the AFC Cup final, where Al-Seeb of Oman beat them to the trophy.

Paulo Josué wears the captain's armband now, at a Kuala Lumpur Stadium that holds 18,000 in red and navy blue.
