Penya Encarnada

Before Penya Encarnada had a ground, a trophy or a place in Andorran football, it had an allegiance: a group of Benfica supporters in Andorra la Vella set up a cultural association in 2009 to keep the Portuguese club's name and colours alive in the principality, and only afterwards turned it into a football side. The tie has never loosened — the club still folds the name Casa de l'Esport Lisboa i Benfica into its own, and its red and black kit is a direct borrow from Lisbon, which is also where the nickname Encarnados comes from.

That origin has shaped how the club builds a squad. Rather than raise players through its own youth ranks, Penya Encarnada has tended to sign experience from elsewhere — Chilean defender Ricardo Escobar and Mexican forward Diego Nájera both wore the shirt, alongside academy graduates cut loose by Athletic Bilbao and Atlético Madrid who found a second footballing life in Andorra la Vella.

On the pitch, the club's record is a story of getting up and coming back down. It has won the Segona Divisió three times, in 2014–15, 2019–20 and 2021–22, each title good for promotion to the top flight. None of the stays lasted: relegation followed straight after the 2015–16 season, and again after 2017–18, when the club lost a play-off to FC Ordino. Local needle comes from Santa Coloma, the parish next door, where games against FC Santa Coloma and UE Santa Coloma are known as the Derbi Colomenc.

The Segona Divisió has been the club's ceiling. Three promotions have produced three quick returns, and the Primera Divisió title and the Copa Constitució have both stayed out of reach.
